Vidya Talk: Soulstorm

Sat Mar 8, 2008, 8:11 PM
  • Mood: Tired
  • Listening to: Love Spirals Downwards
  • Playing: Soulstorm
  • Drinking: Ohrange...
So I got Soulstorm and these are my first impressions. (Only minor spoiler talk below.)

**********************************************************************

- I would rather have waited for the SoB and Dark Eldar to come out for DoW2 rather than have this expansion. Some of the faces and texturing looks absolutely shit. Sister squad look like a bunch of space marines in drag. Seriously, they have goatee's or a soul patch.

- Some of the new voice acting is FUCKING TERRIBLE. The tutorial guy and the announcement guy sound like GW redshirts. It makes you want to rage enough to punch the computer monitor. I cringed every time I hear the Missionary's captured point hymn thing. I just want to kick him where his balls used to be.

- The game feels like a patch rather than an expansion. First off the intro is crap. You could not have shouted MARY SUE PLOT ARMOR louder than tau fire suddenly turning into spitwads against SoB armor while they casually walk down the hill and shoot at stuff.

There is a lack of faction intros. It gives you no real depth into why each army is fighting on the Kaurava system. The story is very vague and doesn't really emerse you into it. It's more of a 'just get in there and fight' feeling. Using the same voice acting and character models for the new leaders also adds to this. Even when I entered a stronghold there was no interaction between the two leaders like there was in DC. Those banters usually gave insight into why that faction was there.

The only indication of why the Sisters fought IG came from this. [link]
But even when you defeat IG it doesn't really get into any specfics. Not even a mention of why there is a downed Ultramarine ship in the area.

- The Sisters are pretty ordinary. Wasn't really motivated to use them. Terrible super unit. Bad assassin choice. Only liked the Penitent engines and Repentias.

- Flying units are 'meh'. They're ok for harassing stuff but the game could have done easily without them.

- Vance Stubbs is ,without a doubt, the most boring and useless IG commander yet. The intro to his stronghold makes him look like he's reading out some grocery shopping list to his gay life partner, the commissar, who sounds extremely bored of their sex life. I thought Lukas Alexander was crap compared to Sturnn, like everyone else. But now LA is like fucking Sturnn compared to Stubbs. Now you can imagine how much suck he is compared to Sturnn.

No inspiring speech.

No heart.

No awesome.

Final destination.

Seriously, Stubbs sucks. If you like him you are also of the homosexual variety and should become an hero ASAP.

Stuff I did like from Soulstorm:

- Repentias are sexy. They make me hard gay.

- Gorgutz back. Wiliest ork evar.

- Tau and their DEATH STAR made me laff.

**********************************************************************

And so concludes my first impressions/rant about Soulstorm. If you're gonna comment about the game I suggest keeping the spoilers to a low. As usual, retarded comments will be erased.

P.S Stubbs sucks.

P.P.S I'm thinking of drawing Stubbs getting raped in a Dark Eldar prison. That's how much I hate him.

Edit:

After playing it some more, I guess most of my disappointment came from how it was visually presented and the story.

Also I forgot to comment on the Dark Eldar. They're pretty much everything I expected them to be - fast and gay. But gay in a good way. I was expecting space emos into bdsm and that's exactly what I got. So I'm not disappointed by them. The Archon is pretty cool. The warp beasts are freaky. And the Dais is fun. If you're one of those whiners complaining about how they're gonna suck because they're gay emo gimpy faggot space elves then guess what? Quit whining because that's EXACTLY what they are. But they're good like that. So you can either get your ass raped by them, or you can rape them back. Either way it's win win for them. :lmao:

Some other stuff:

- The bases don't carry over. In DC whenever you complete a map your structures would remain on that map so when you have to defend it or something you could have an easier time to beat the attacker.

- Autoresolve fights take off strength rating points on the province. Meaning if you autoresolved a fight your province would lose whatever units you used to reinforce it with.

- The Chaos Lord whimpers. Yes, he is a freakin baby. I burst out laffing coz it was so non-manly and unexpected. Most of the time he's 'HAHA YES! JUST AS PLANNED! KILL! KIIIIIIIIIILL!' Then all of a sudden it's 'KHORNE! WHY YOU DO THIS!? BAAAWWWWWW!' and then he starts crying.

- Necron Lord talks. Lol wut.

- The strongholds don't seem to be that hard anymore. I'm playing it on normal so I can imagine what a walk in the park it must be on easy. And if you're playing it on easy, then you shouldn't be playing RTS games. :/

Overall I still stand by my first impressions. It's not a terrible addition, it's just that the story seems non-existant and it feels very rushed (which it was). Like a serving of cake without the icing. I love the entire series and all it's expansions. But this feels like a last attempt to vampirize my wallet. Which it did. But lucky for me I has money to burn.

Also = Stubbs, faggotry, etc etc.

Edit 2:

Also people should stop whining about why nids aren't in this. You should be thankful that they aren't and just shut up and wait for DoW2 where they can do them justice.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that. I was kinda optimistic for Soulstorm, but after seeing some of the vids from it on Youtube, you're pretty right- the intro is the shittiest thing to have ever been shitty before.

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- WOW-- What a Ride!"
I'm highly tempted to develop a case of extreme dyslexia... not really.

At least I can take solice at Gorguts' return... did the standing races get any new units this time?

Preferisco scherzare. ;p

Most of my friends parents don't trust me. Most of my friends parents are idiots.
I didn't think you'd be too happy with Gorgutz considering what he is rumored to have done prior to leaving Kronus...

Oh snap need a new sig.

I bought it too, and quite frankly it's been the same old same old as with Dark Crusade, Winter Assault, and the original. I did like seeing Gorgutz back even if I've only been the Space Marines so far (favorite race then IG even with Stubbs and his homosexual tryst [we need Vindy STAT]). Haven't bothered with the SoB and I HATE the Dark Eldar. They're basically drag queen, dominatrix, fetishist, schmucks. Though I still love my DoW carnage, there's been a few cons and pros.

Cons:
-Flying units are indeed meh though they do help with recon.
-Honor Guard units are not as impressive as with DC.
-No race intros which is garbage.
-Confusing battle map interface.
-No Taldeer. What the fuck?
-No Gabriel Angelos. Quit fucking around with these new commanders and stick with the best Blood Raven or just put in the Ultramarines because they're always in yo face.
-Nothing drastically new apart from the two new races which I haven't fully tried yet except for the Dark Eldar Douchebags in the demo. They are totally gayer than the regular Eldar (barring Macha/Taldeer/Pedo Eldrad "Dick"thran)
-Seriously needs the CoH engine.

Pros:
-Still has that gritty DoW combat I like.
-Gorgutz, enough said.
-Tau Cannon is kinda cool when you have/obtain it.
-Racial abilities are kind of cool when you conquer/obtain them.
-Easier to kick ass with Space Marines now.
-Massive multiplayer opportunities if you have all four games.

Overall I still kind of like it and I'll play each race just to see what happens. Nevertheless it'll never come close to my opinion of Dark Crusade and the original DoW. Should've been slightly cheaper than its original cost. Things like these are why I stick to the original fallback races of Space Marines, IG, and then Chaos.

Who believes in the Boogeyman?
Also, I'm glad you wrote this review. I was tempted to buy it right away, but now I guess it doesn't merit full price. I'll wait for it to go down.

Oh snap need a new sig.
After DC i didn't have the slightest interest in soul. Judging from this review it appears i was correct in assuming soul was going to suck, hard. Vid previews were unimpressive, doesn't sound like they made any effort to rebalance the races, and they introduced a new way to be a noob-flying units. Sigh. Poor DOW. The expansions had so much potential.
Must...play...as...Adepta...Sororitas...

But, yeah, wait for a price drop and go play the Space Hulk remake.

Just the flying units.

Also the Necrons have a couple of new tricks.
